Mount Matang Indian Heritage Centre was established as a place to preserve and share the history of Sarawak's Indian community, centred around the rediscovery of the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and the stories, objects and people connected to it.
Working with Friends of Sarawak Museum, we developed the creative and communications materials for the centre's launch, helping introduce its story to the wider public while creating opportunities for younger members of the community to see themselves within it.
The Heritage Centre is more than a collection of objects. It provides a place for stories and artefacts connected to the temple and the community to be gathered, returned and remembered. As the collection continues to grow, it becomes a place where a community can keep its history together - particularly important for Sarawak's small Indian community, whose stories are rarely documented in one place.
We also produced a short film featuring perspectives from community youth and former society presidents, bringing together different generations to reflect on the temple, its history and what it means to keep that connection alive.
For the launch, we developed a suite of creative communications across print, digital and on-site applications. This included the Heritage Centre brochure, social media content, posters, bunting and banners, creating a consistent way for visitors to encounter the Centre and understand the story behind it.
A big part of the story is what happens next. As older generations carry memories of the temple and its history, there is a growing need for younger members of the community to become part of that story too.
By bringing together older community voices, younger members and the stories held by the Heritage Centre, the launch created a starting point for those conversations to continue.
The Heritage Centre is still growing, as is the collection of stories and objects that surround it. For now, it provides a place for those stories to be gathered, shared and passed on, giving the next generation a place to begin.
